Simply enter in the variables and click the calculate button. The Turnover is the number of hours that it will take for the entire body of water to pass through the filter system. Commercial pools are designed to a minimum of 6 hours, while a residential pool can be up to 12. In general, the faster the turnover the better the water.

As for the filter area differences, 12 - 15 gpm per sq.ft. is for a commercial application. 20 gpm is used for a lot of residential pools and is generally the maximum flowrate through a filter. The lower the flowrate, the better the water will filter. We still need to attain the 15 gpm/sq.ft. to properly backwash the sand filter.

For most applications a sand filter will serve you better. On a pool or fountain a cartridge filter will plug up much too quickly. D.E. (diatomaceous earth) filters are mainly used on large commercial pools where a high flowrate is required but there is insufficient room for sand filters. D.E. filtration systems have smaller footprints than same sized sand filters.

The Boilers must be derated by 10% for installations over 2000'. To get a 1½° Temperature rise, increase boiler size bu 50%. For 2° Temperature rise. increase BTU's by 75%. Derate for Propane gas as follows: Models 334-824 by 6%. Models 962-1826 by 8%. Models 2100-4001 do not need to be derated. This information is specific to our RayPak Boilers.

Now aside from any automatic chemical feeders etc. you may want to install, an Ozone system might be something you have considered. Below are the figures for a commercially designed system. A water body other than a public pool will be very successful with this system, but can be substantially reduced and still derive great benefits. These numbers are for a slipstream system, based on total filtered water . The tanks are oversized 30% to allow for the fact that we have not yet found a tank that is 100% efficient. The 1.5 ppm figure is what you might size a Spa or very heavy use system at. More on this in the Ozone section. Go check out the Ion section to see how you can round out your system very nicely.
